Is it too late to change careers at 40 or 50?

Your years of work are an advantage. 34 of the 47 new roles we track mention years of experience in their entry notes, and many take months to get ready for, not years.

From our plan B catalog. Every plan can train you for one of them, one session a week.

  • AI agent ops specialist

Ready in about 1 to 3 months

Most people get in from the support floor, often as an internal move once their team turns on an AI agent. Employers usually ask for 2 to 3 years in support or support ops.

  • AI workflow builder

Ready in about 2 to 4 months

This has the lowest entry bar of the strong roles. USA Clinics Group asked for 3+ years of process improvement, and a portfolio of 3 to 5 working automations often opens the door.

  • Legal AI implementation specialist

Ready in about 2 to 4 months

Paralegals get in at entry level, especially with hands-on prompt work. Higher-paid legal engineer roles, like Harvey's at $270K to $320K in on-target earnings (OTE), require a law degree (JD).

  • AI deployment strategist

Ready in about 3 to 6 months

Some startups hire at entry level if you can run a project and talk with customers. Others, like Mistral AI, ask for 4+ years, and a few require Python.

  • AI enablement and adoption lead

Ready in about 3 to 6 months

Most postings ask for 3 to 5 years in learning and development, change management or enablement. The Insight Global contract said coding was not required.

  • AI evaluation specialist

Ready in about 3 to 6 months for someone with 2 to 4 years in product, QA or analysis who publishes 2 or 3 eval write-ups

Lab roles are few and draw strong applicants. Below them, most listings called evaluation are contract rating, so people often grow into this from a product or ops role where they already own quality.

  • AI product manager

Ready in about 3 to 6 months

Most postings ask for about 5 to 7 years, often in product. The usual way in is to take over an AI feature where you already work.

  • E-discovery analyst for AI review

Ready in about 3 to 6 months if you already use Relativity

Paralegals and litigation support staff who already work in Relativity get in most often. Postings ask for 2 to 5 years at the entry level and 5 to 7 for senior roles.

  • GTM engineer (AI sales systems)

Ready in about 3 to 6 months for someone who already runs a sales team or its CRM, longer if SQL is new

Practitioners in RevGuild's sample (44 people) had a median of about 7 years of prior experience, most often in sales or growth roles. Postings usually want SQL or some scripting plus a CRM, and a portfolio of working workflows helps more than a certificate.

  • LLM evaluation data scientist

Ready in about 3 to 6 months for a data scientist with 2 to 4 years who publishes one eval write-up with a judge-agreement number and a caught regression

Most postings ask for 3+ years of data science and often a graduate degree. The usual route is owning evaluation for an AI feature at your current job, then moving.

  • Legal engineer at a legal AI company

Ready in about 3 to 6 months of focused work once you have 3 years of practice

Postings ask for a JD and about 3 years of practice at a firm or in-house. Junior associates in years 1 and 2 are usually not yet eligible.

  • Warehouse robotics and maintenance technician

Ready in about 3 to 9 months to apply for an operator or apprentice seat from the floor; the apprenticeship itself takes longer before the technician title

Technician postings ask for a high school diploma and about 2 years of maintenance, conveyor or schematic experience, or Amazon's Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship certificate instead of the conveyor years. The apprentice and RME (Amazon's maintenance team) operator postings ask for vocational training or about a year at the company, basic math and some mechanical or electrical experience.

How to start

  • Pick your job first

Your plan matches plan B roles to the work you already do.

  • Keep your paycheck
