Bar admission makes you answerable for the filing. Proving you can check a machine's work is how you keep getting staffed.

A typical week at the middle pace. Your plan uses your own tasks.
Are junior lawyers being replaced by AI?
By our task-by-task count, 31 of a typical 40-hour week as an attorney still need a person. Tools could already take about 9 hours. Legal AI now drafts research memos, summarizes depositions and runs first-pass review well enough that partners accept it after checking. Thomson Reuters markets CoCounsel Legal as "engineered to work at the level of a senior associate." That pitch is aimed at the hours a junior associate bills, and about 23% of your week is already work a tool can do.

No tool can sign a filing. Under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11, a lawyer who signs, files or later advocates a paper certifies the law and facts in it. Courts are enforcing that hard. They imposed at least $145,000 in sanctions for AI-generated fake citations in the first quarter of 2026 alone (ComplexDiscovery, April 2026). Large firms are also hiring fewer first-years, a dip that started for cycle reasons and that AI is now adding to. The plan below makes you the associate who owns verification on your matters and gets in front of judges and clients sooner. The license protects that work, and the market still pays for it.
The hard truth
Most new lawyers earn far less than headlines.
Big-firm salaries make the news, but the typical new lawyer earns far less. Most of you borrowed to get here.

What stays yours
Signing or standing behind a filing
You carry the accountability yourself. Rule 11(b), the federal rule on signed filings, attaches to whoever signs, files or advocates the paper. ABA Model Rule 5.2, from the American Bar Association's ethics rules, binds a subordinate lawyer even when following a supervisor's direction.
Depositions, hearings and court appearances
This work needs you in the room. A judge or witness reacts in real time, and you adjust.
Client calls and advice
This rests on the relationship and on your own accountability. The client relies on you, and the duties to communicate and keep confidences are personal.
Negotiating with opposing counsel
This depends on relationships and context. What the other side will accept shows up in past calls more than in the file.
Checking AI and staff work before the partner sees it
This is verification work. Judges now fault even non-signing counsel who miss fake citations (ABA Journal, Oct 1 2026). Catching errors is becoming a named duty.
What should a law firm associate do about AI?
Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.
- A
Own verification on your matters
Why it fits
Why you. You already do the last check before filing. It is also the part of the job that grows as more first drafts come from tools.
The gap. You need a written checklist, a ledger of tool errors, and a partner who agrees to use them.
The trade-off. Checking is not billed at a premium and can turn into unrewarded cleanup. It works only if your name is on the process and the time is budgeted, which needs a partner's agreement.
Other moves that fit
These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.
Get on your feet sooner
Why it fits
Why you. Depositions, hearings and client calls are the durable work, and firms decide early in a career who gets them.
The gap. You need first-chair reps. Pro bono matters and smaller cases are the usual route.
The trade-off. Pro bono time may not count fully toward billables, and the hours land on top of a full week.
Legal engineer at a legal AI company
Why it fits
Why you. Vendors hire lawyers with three or more years of practice to run pilots and build workflows for firms like yours.
The gap. You need some years of practice, a workflow you built and tested, and comfort leading a demo.
The trade-off. You stop practicing. Part of the pay rides on sales targets, travel can run two to three times a month, and vendor jobs move with venture funding.
What's a plan B for attorneys leaving big law?
Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.
BPlan B, picked for this role
Legal engineer at a legal AI company
You already check research and drafts before a partner signs, and vendors hire practicing lawyers to show firms how to trust and check their AI.
Other options
AI evaluation specialist
Grading a model's research memo against the right answer is your daily cite-check, and legal AI companies hire lawyers to write those tests.
Expert AI trainer (contract)
AI labs pay lawyers by the hour to write hard legal questions and grade answers, and the work uses your research and verification skills.
In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.
The first two weeks
The first 2 of 13 weeks. Three sessions a week of 15 to 60 minutes each, fit around billable work, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. Each session ends with something you can keep. By week 13 you'll have a pre-filing checklist your ally partner has reviewed, a verification ledger with error counts by task, and a decision from your supervising partner on owning verification.

Risks beyond AI: moderateBig Law hiring cycle
Large-firm entry hiring has peaked and then fallen for about three years after every peak since the 1980s, and 2024 was a peak. This dip started without a recession, and firms now cite AI as a reason to keep classes small. It matters most if you are at a large firm or hoping to lateral into one. The profession as a whole is still growing.
Where this could be wrong
- We blended litigation and transactional work into one week. A pure deal associate has more drafting and diligence and less courtroom time, so the share of the week that holds up would be smaller.
- The hours data may tell the opposite story. If AI keeps raising the volume of billable work, firms may keep hiring juniors to check it, and the entry squeeze stays mild.
- In-house associates do not bill hours. For them the pressure comes through headcount budgets and outside-counsel spend, which we did not score separately.
- Citi's survey covered 57 large firms. Small and mid-size firms hired a growing share of new graduates and may behave differently.
