Example · Bank Branch Manager
The biggest question for your seat is whether your branch survives the next consolidation map. AI comes second.
34 of your 40 hours still need you

A typical week at the middle pace. Your plan uses your own tasks.
Are bank branches closing because of AI?
By our task-by-task count, 34 of a typical 40-hour week as a bank branch manager still need a person. Tools could already take about 6 hours. US branches fell for about 15 years. NCRC, a community lending group, counted from FDIC (federal deposit insurer) data and found only four positive quarters out of 65 since 2010.

Then the trend paused: openings beat closures by 71 in the fourth quarter of 2025 and by 50 in the first quarter of 2026, with Chase, Fifth Third and Bank of America opening and TD closing 51 in one quarter (NCRC, May 14, 2026). When two banks merge, overlapping branches close, and every closed branch takes a branch manager seat with it.
The work that makes your seat worth having, coaching, the business owners, the P&L (profit and loss) and the vault, is the least exposed work you do. About 61% of your week sits there. So the goal is to be the manager a bank picks to run more branches after a merger, with a record that proves it.
The hard truth
The teller teams you lead are projected to shrink.
Teller jobs are expected to fall sharply over the next decade, partly because each branch needs fewer people. Smaller branch teams mean fewer branches need their own manager.

What stays yours
Coaching bankers and growing the next assistant manager
This rests on relationship and context. You learn whether a banker is ready for a business client by watching them for months.
Business owners and the local community
This depends on relationship. A model can find a business owner the right product, and she still wants a person she trusts across the desk.
Owning the branch P&L
What protects this is accountability, held informally. Your regional manager wants one name next to deposit growth and expense.
Fraud, elder exploitation and overrides
This comes down to verification and accountability borrowed from the bank's duties under the BSA (anti-money laundering law) and Reg E (electronic transfer rules). Someone in the building has to stop the wire and sign the override.
Cash, vault, dual control and branch security
This rests on presence and accountability, because the vault needs two people and an audit trail every day.
What's the next career for a bank branch manager?
Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.
- A
Market or multi-branch manager
Why it fits
Why you. You already run a whole branch, and banks fill market seats from branch managers who can show results.
The gap. You need a written record of results and an assistant manager ready to run your branch.
The trade-off. More driving, less time with any one team, and the first year usually goes to fixing the weakest branch.
Other moves that fit
These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.
Business banking relationship manager
Why it fits
Why you. You already hold the local business relationships, and they are the most protected work you do.
The gap. You need credit training, since most banks want commercial lending courses before they give you a portfolio. The Small Business Banker Certificate from the ABA (American Bankers Association) is $495 for members and $695 for non-members.
The trade-off. You give up managing people, and pay moves toward an incentive plan.
AI customer experience strategist
Why it fits
Why you. You decide every day which customer needs a person and which can self-serve, and you know what goes wrong at the handoff.
The gap. You need measured routing work and experience with contact-center data.
The trade-off. These seats are few and sit at headquarters, and you leave the branch behind. Take it as a second path, if your branch is closing and no market seat opens.
What's a plan B for retail banking managers?
Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.
BPlan B, picked for this role
AI customer experience strategist
You decide every day who gets a banker, who gets the app and who gets you, and AI agents need someone to draw that line.
Other options
Agent workforce manager
You run a staff to targets, check their work and own the escalations, and a bank's AI agents need the same oversight.
AI governance analyst
You already work inside fraud, holds and compliance rules, and banks need people who check that AI tools follow those same rules.
In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.
The first two weeks
The first 2 of 13 weeks. Three sessions a week of 30, 45 and 30 minutes, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. Each session ends with something you can keep. By week 13 you'll have a weekly branch flash your regional manager reads, a business book of your top 40 customers, and a memo asking for a market of branches.
- Week 1: Measure your starting point
What you do
- ALog how you spend your time for one week, sorted by the task list in this report.
- AList every report you produce or receive, who reads it and what they do with it.
- AWrite down the last three numbers your regional manager raised before you did.
- BTake the first half of AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, a free course on Anthropic Academy. Note the four habits of working well with AI.
- Week 2: Start a weekly branch flash
What you do
- ADesign a one-page weekly flash, a short branch update, with deposits, loans, referrals, service score and your top three variances with a cause for each.
- AFill in the flash for last week. Draft the variance notes in a bank-approved tool, or by hand if you have none.
- ASend the flash to your regional manager before the scorecard call.
- BFinish AI Fluency and pass its final assessment.

Risks beyond AI: highBranch consolidation risk
A branch manager seat exists only while the branch does, and banks decide that from foot traffic, deposits, leases and the overlap with a merger partner. Market managers who cover several branches remove more seats. That risk, more than AI, decides whether your seat is there in two years.
Where this could be wrong
- At a community bank or credit union with no merger plans, branch risk is lower and the P&L work is bigger than we estimated.
- The national branch count turned positive for two quarters. If that holds through 2027, branch consolidation risk drops from high to moderate.
- If banks let AI agents handle lending intake and account servicing on their own, lending work becomes much more exposed and branches need fewer bankers, which shrinks the team you manage.
- Branch counts differ by source. We used NCRC's count from FDIC data and left out figures from the OCC, the national bank regulator, that we saw only in news reports.
