Drafts from a brief now cost almost nothing. Interviews, checked claims and a brand's voice still need a writer.

Is content writing dead?

By our task-by-task count, 18 of a typical 40-hour week as a content writer still need a person. Tools could already take about 22 hours. Clean first drafts now cost almost nothing, and writers feel that more than most workers we have studied. A model can write a blog post, a nurture email or forty ad variants in a minute.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says plainly that "increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) for writing is projected to dampen demand" for writers. Job postings for writers, including copywriters, fell 28% in 2025, more than three times the drop in postings overall (Bloomberry, November 2025). About 54% of your week is work tools can now do.

The part of your work that holds is specific. A tool cannot interview your customer. It cannot know which claim legal will reject, and it cannot be blamed when a statistic turns out to be wrong. The next 90 days move you toward that work and make it visible, in a portfolio you can take anywhere.

The hard truth

Most writers work for themselves in a flat field.

About two in three writers are self-employed, and BLS expects no net growth in writing jobs. Plan on spending part of your career finding clients and pricing your work, alongside the writing itself.

What you can doRun it like a small business. Specialize in one industry, price by project, and keep at least three steady clients so one loss can't sink you.

What stays yours

Interviewing customers and subject experts for case studies and bylined pieces

The quote does not exist until a person asks the follow-up question. The customer agrees to talk to you and approves what you wrote.

Checking every claim, statistic and source before a piece ships

A wrong number in an ad is a legal problem for the advertiser, and the 2024 rule from the FTC, the federal consumer protection agency, on fake reviews and testimonials covers AI-generated testimonials too. Someone has to have checked, and that check carries your name.

Holding the brand voice, including ghostwriting for leaders and deciding what the brand will not say

The rules that matter are mostly unwritten: the competitor you never name, the phrase the CEO hates, the promise sales cannot keep. A model follows a style guide, but it can't know what the guide left out.

Running intake and review rounds with product, sales and legal

Getting twenty minutes from a product manager, or a yes from legal, takes months of trust.

Deciding the core message of a landing page

A model offers ten headlines. Picking the one that is true, fits the sales story and survives legal review is still a person's call.

What can a content writer do now that AI writes?

Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.

  1. A

Editor and claims owner for AI-assisted content

Ready in about 3 to 6 months for a bigger role where you work, and longer for an editor or content lead title elsewhere

    Why it fits

Why you. Checking facts, holding the voice and running review rounds are already the safest parts of your work.

The gap. You need proof. Few writers can show a claims process or a voice rubric that others use.

The trade-off. You write less. Editor seats are fewer than writer seats were.

Other moves that fit

These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.

  1. Go deep in one subject where claims are regulated or expertise is scarce

Ready in about 6 to 12 months

    Why it fits

Why you. Interviewing experts and checking claims are your strongest skills, and both are worth more in health, finance, insurance, legal and technical B2B (business-to-business) work.

The gap. You need to learn the field and write three pieces in it.

The trade-off. Your market gets narrower. If that industry cuts marketing spend, you feel it directly.

  2. Conversation design: write how AI agents talk

Ready in about 4 to 8 months

    Why it fits

Why you. Voice, tone and plain words are the core of how an AI agent talks to customers.

The gap. You would need to learn to design fallbacks, handoffs and test rubrics. The plan B track covers them.

The trade-off. Most openings want a portfolio of designed conversations, and the field is small. You trade marketing writing for product work.

What's a plan B for copywriters?

Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.

BPlan B, picked for this role

Conversation designer

You already write in a brand's voice and know what it should never say, which is how an AI agent's persona and fallbacks get written.

Other options

  • Context engineer and knowledge curator

You turn messy briefs into clear, structured pages, and that is the help content AI agents answer from.

  • Expert AI trainer (contract)

You check claims and edit drafts against a standard, which is what AI trainer projects pay writers to do with model answers.

In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.

The first two weeks

The first 2 of 13 weeks. Three sessions a week of 30, 30 and 60 minutes, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. Each session ends with something you can keep. Together they build a portfolio that shows your work starts with people and ends with checked claims. By week 13 you'll have a claims sheet and voice guide others can use, a published case study built from customer interviews, and a portfolio sent with three applications or pitches.

  1. Week 1: Measure your week
    What you do
    • AKeep a time log for one week. Sort your hours by the task list on this page.
    • AList your last 20 pieces. For each, note the type, whether it used an interview or original source, and its traffic or clicks.
    • AIf you freelance, list each client and work out your real hourly rate for each one.
    • BTake the first half of AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, a free Anthropic course. Write down which writing tasks to hand to AI and which to keep.
  2. Week 2: See what AI already does
    What you do
    • ARun three of your recent briefs through an approved AI tool.
    • ACompare each AI draft with what you shipped. List what each one got wrong or left out.
    • AWrite one paragraph on what your version had that the AI draft did not.
    • BFinish AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations and pass its final quiz.

Risks beyond AI: moderateBudget and platform risk

Content budgets are among the first marketing lines cut when revenue slows, and a content team is often one writer deep, so one cut can end the seat. Freelance platforms add a second squeeze: you compete on price with every other writer and now a free tool, and the platform takes its fee either way. For this role the AI risk is still the larger one.

Where this could be wrong
  • Exposure differs by setting. Agency writers billed by the hour may see faster cuts; in-house writers at regulated companies, slower ones.
  • The posting data is broad. Bloomberry's writer category includes copy editors and technical writers, and we could not verify a 2026 posting series for copywriters alone.
  • We could not verify a 2026 primary source on freelance copywriting rates. The rate story rests on the 2023 freelance studies and the direction of postings.
  • If AI answers start sending clicks to sourced, original pieces, interviews gain value faster than we assumed.

This is an example. Your plan uses your own week.
