Example · IT Manager
AI agents are taking on the ticket queue. Your seat rests on the calls you answer for, so make sure your boss can see them.

Is IT management a safe career with AI?
By our task-by-task count, 33 of a typical 40-hour week as an IT manager still need a person. Tools could already take about 7 hours. The work that makes your seat worth having is the least exposed work you do: security and compliance, outages, the IT budget, your people and the trade-offs with the business. About 59% of your week sits there.

The exposed work is the routine queue and the paperwork around it. ServiceNow said in February 2026 that its own AI agents handle over 90% of employee IT requests inside the company, and Microsoft launched Agent 365 in November 2025 so IT can register, watch and control agents.
The bigger risk to you is the size of the team under you. When the help desk shrinks to one person and an agent, someone asks whether the company needs an IT manager or a contract with an MSP, an outside IT firm. The IT manager who runs the agents, owns the rules and can show the numbers is the one the company keeps.
The hard truth
Hiring is slowing first for the team under you.
Gartner tells CIOs to slow hiring, starting with low-complexity work. BLS expects user support jobs to shrink over the next decade.

What stays yours
Security and compliance: patching, audits, insurance answers
Someone signs the insurance questionnaire and answers the auditor. If the answer was wrong, a claim can be denied.
Outages and major incidents
Deciding to restore from backup or roll back a change, with the business waiting, takes a person with context and authority.
The IT budget and where money goes
Leadership wants one name next to the number and one person to defend a renewal.
Projects and system rollouts
Nobody has written down which site will resist a change or which report finance can't live without.
Coaching and growing your team
Whether your administrator is ready to own security comes from months of watching their work.
What's the next role for an IT manager?
Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.
- A
IT manager who owns AI and agent operations for the company
Why it fits
Why you. You already control identity, access and the ticket system, which is where agents get their permissions.
The gap. You have no AI inventory, written agent rules or measured pilot yet.
The trade-off. You are building the case that IT runs with fewer people, and your own team will feel it first.
Other moves that fit
These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.
AI agent ops specialist or service desk AI owner
Why it fits
Why you. You know which tickets are routine and which ones hurt when they go wrong.
The gap. You have run a queue but have not yet tuned an agent with test sets and scores.
The trade-off. This is often a step down in title and pay from IT manager, and some postings are contracts.
Security and IT risk lead
Why it fits
Why you. Security is already one of your largest and most protected tasks.
The gap. You have managed security without specializing in it, and senior security roles ask for depth you may not have.
The trade-off. You leave general IT leadership, and we did not verify current postings or credential prices for this path.
What's a plan B for IT managers?
Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.
BPlan B, picked for this role
AI agent ops specialist
You already set triage rules, watch SLAs and fix routing, which is how you tune what a service desk agent handles and hands off.
Other options
AI incident and safety lead
You run outages, write runbooks and pull vendors and leaders together under pressure, and AI incidents need the same calm process.
AI governance analyst
You already grant and review access and answer for compliance, which is where deciding what each AI tool may touch begins.
In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.
The first two weeks
The first 2 of 13 weeks. Each week has three sessions of 30, 45 and 30 minutes, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. By week 13 you'll have an inventory of every AI tool in the company, a measured agent pilot with published rules, and an agent tuning report for your portfolio.
- Week 1: Measure your week
What you do
- ATrack your time for one week against the task list in this report.
- APull six months of tickets and sort them by category, volume and time to resolve.
- AList every system and vendor you run, with the person who owns each one.
- BTake the first half of Anthropic's AI Fluency course, a free short course on working with AI.
- Week 2: Build the cost case
What you do
- ADivide your total IT cost by the number of tickets. Add what an outage cost the business last year.
- ARead your contract with your MSP, the outside IT firm, and list everything it excludes.
- AWrite one page for your boss comparing in-house IT with an MSP, using your numbers. Save it for week 12.
- BFinish the AI Fluency course and pass its final assessment.

- AI Fluency: Framework & FoundationsAnthropic Academy · Free
Yes. It is a fast, free baseline for weeks 1 and 2.
- AI Capabilities and LimitationsAnthropic Academy · Free
Yes. It helps you predict where an agent will fail on your tickets.
- Introduction to agent skillsAnthropic Academy · Free
Yes. It is short, and it shows what a help desk could package for agents.
Risks beyond AI: highOutsourcing and consolidation risk
An in-house IT team shrinks when help desk seats go to an agent or an MSP and are not backfilled. A smaller team makes the IT manager seat look like a line item next to an outsourcing quote, and a buyer with central IT sees a company IT manager as the overlapping role. This outranks the AI risk to the work itself.
Where this could be wrong
- At a company under 100 people, you are often the only IT person, and hands-on troubleshooting is a much bigger part of your week than we scored.
- At a large enterprise, an IT manager is one of several layers. There, the risk of losing a manager layer is higher than we scored, and budget work is a smaller part of your week.
- ServiceNow's 90% figure is its own internal result. If customer results come in much lower, routine ticket work moves to agents more slowly than the moderate scenario says.
- If agents get good at second-level (L2) troubleshooting, that work becomes highly exposed and the help desk shrinks faster.
