Is nursing still a good career with AI?

In the work a nursing student is heading toward, 31 of a typical 40-hour week still need a person, by our task-by-task count. Tools could already take about 9 hours. Bedside nursing is one of the least exposed paths in this whole product, and the evidence supports saying so plainly. The work that gets a new nurse hired is giving medications, assessing patients and doing hands-on care.

Each of those needs a licensed person in the room who answers for what happens. The part of the job AI tools are moving into is documentation, and most nurses would gladly hand it over. Hospitals are already testing ambient charting for nurses, and every version we found keeps a nurse reviewing the note before it enters the record.

That does not mean the next two years are easy. Your main risks have little to do with AI. Hospitals are under budget pressure, and the first year on a unit is hard enough that many new nurses leave it. Your job between now and graduation is to get one paid hospital role before senior year and to walk into residency interviews with evidence that you can handle a full assignment. The plan below is built around those two things.

The hard truth

The first year is when many new nurses leave.

Your degree is in demand, and the job is still hard to start. More than one in five newly hired hospital nurses leaves within a year.

What you can doChoose a first job with a formal nurse residency program and a preceptor. Ask about new-grad retention in interviews. A steady first year sets up everything after.

What stays yours

Giving medications and answering for them

Barcode scanners and pump libraries catch some errors. The nurse who scans, checks and gives the drug is the one the board of nursing holds responsible. No tool sits in that chain as a licensee.

Assessing a patient and noticing something is off

State nurse practice acts make assessment an RN function that cannot be handed to unlicensed staff. A model reads the vitals in the chart. It cannot feel a cold, clammy arm or hear that a patient's speech changed since 2 p.m.

Hands-on care: lines, wounds, catheters, turning, procedure prep

Nobody is building a robot that starts an IV on a dehydrated 84-year-old. This is the work new grads are hired to do and get faster at all year.

Calming a frightened family and speaking up for a patient

Advocacy is written into the ANA Code of Ethics (2025 edition). Families trust the person who comes back every hour.

Delegating to CNAs and calling a rapid response

When an RN delegates a task, the RN stays accountable for it. When a patient declines, the nurse who escalates is the one the system depends on. Both get stronger with every shift you work.

Which nursing specialties grow with AI?

Plan A is your best move in the field you are studying for. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.

  1. A

Get a paid hospital job before senior year: nurse extern, patient care tech or CNA (certified nursing assistant)

Ready in 2 to 4 weeks to apply, with the job starting next summer

    Why it fits

Why you. Summer externships are built for nursing students about a year from graduation. Many programs require at least one completed clinical rotation.

The gap. Applications close early. Children's Mercy Kansas City's 2027 extern program, for example, closes November 1, 2026 or sooner and pays $20 an hour. You need a resume, a reference from a clinical instructor and, at some hospitals, a state CNA certification.

The trade-off. It costs you a summer and some weekend shifts during the school year. If you need a higher-paying summer job or you cannot relocate, a part-time CNA or tech role near school does the same work more slowly.

Other moves that fit

These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.

  1. Aim for a new-grad nurse residency on a general medical or step-down unit

Ready in about a week for the list, with applications in senior year

    Why it fits

Why you. Residencies are how most hospitals now train new nurses through the first year. They are the direct answer to the first-year turnover numbers.

The gap. You need a list of programs in the region you want, with their accreditation and their application windows for your graduating class. Most open in your final semester.

The trade-off. The most popular programs at big academic centers get far more applicants than seats. Being flexible on location or unit, especially toward nonmetro hospitals, where HRSA projects the largest shortages, widens your options a lot.

  2. Start in a specialty: ICU, emergency, pediatrics or labor and delivery

Ready in senior year, if you have experience on that kind of unit

    Why it fits

Why you. If one rotation pulled you hard, some hospitals run specialty new-grad fellowships that take nurses straight from school.

The gap. These programs are selective. An extern or tech job on that specific unit matters even more here, along with strong clinical evaluations.

The trade-off. There are fewer seats and more competition, and many specialty postings ask for med-surg experience first. Apply, but keep a med-surg residency on your list. A year of med-surg will still help you.

What's a plan B for nursing students?

Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.

BPlan B, picked for this role

Clinic AI agent specialist

Work as a patient care tech now, and your bedside sense makes you the clinic's go-to person when its AI agents launch.

Other options

  • Clinical AI and nursing informatics specialist

After your license and two or more years in acute care, being the unit superuser for an AI charting pilot opens this door.

  • Expert AI trainer (contract)

Assessing a patient and noticing something is off is the judgment platforms pay nurses to apply when grading AI clinical answers.

In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.

The first two weeks

The first 2 of 13 weeks. Most weeks have three sessions of 30 to 60 minutes on days without clinicals, plus one 40-minute Plan B session (45 minutes in week 4). The plan assumes a mid-October start, so weeks 8 and 9 land on finals and have one session plus the Plan B session, and weeks 10 to 13 land on winter break. By week 13 you'll have extern applications sent with a one-page clinical portfolio attached, a spreadsheet of twelve residency programs and a starting NCLEX practice score.

  1. Week 1: See where your time goes
    What you do
    • AList a typical week of your classes and clinical days. Mark which parts AI already helps with.
    • ARead the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook page for registered nurses. Pick three facts you could share with your family.
    • ALook up your school's first-time pass rate on the NCLEX, the nursing license exam. Your state board of nursing's website lists it.
    • BTake the first half of Anthropic's AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations course. Use only made-up patients in any example you try.
  2. Week 2: Find extern programs
    What you do
    • AList five hospitals where you could work next summer. For each one, find its nurse extern, patient care tech or CNA (certified nursing assistant) program and write down the deadline.
    • AWrite the first version of your resume. List each clinical rotation with the unit, your patient load and the skills you performed.
    • AAsk one clinical instructor if they will be a reference for you. Ask which email address they prefer.
    • BFinish AI Fluency, then start Anthropic's AI Fluency for Students course.

Risks beyond AI: moderateHospital budget and first-year risk

For nursing students, the bigger risks are hospital budgets and the first year itself. Health care hiring has slowed in 2026 and hospitals face Medicaid cuts phasing in from late 2026, which can mean fewer new-grad residency seats in some markets even while shortages persist elsewhere. About one in five newly hired RNs leaves within a year, so getting in is only half the problem.

Where this could be wrong
  • The task mix is ours. We built a med-surg first-year week from O*NET statements and judgment. If you start in outpatient care, phone triage or case management, more of your week is in exposed tasks, and the AI picture is less comfortable than this report says.
  • The new-grad job market is the least certain thing here. We found plenty of anecdotes about new grads struggling to get hired in 2026 and no recent national data. AACN's most recent employment survey is from 2023. Your school's career office and recent graduates are the best source for your region.
  • Medicaid cuts phase in from late 2026 through 2028. If hospitals respond by cutting residency seats, the hiring door narrows faster than the BLS projection suggests. If they respond by cutting travel nurse spending instead, new grads may benefit.
  • Ambient charting could go further than drafting. If health systems let tools file flowsheet entries without review, charting work changes faster. Your license still holds the medication pass and the assessment, but the documentation part of your accountability would change.

This is an example. Your plan uses your own week.
