Example · Medical Practice Manager
The paperwork around a clinic is moving to software. The person who runs the clinic day is still the one the owners and the staff call.

Is medical practice management a safe career with AI?
By our task-by-task count, 32 of a typical 40-hour week as a medical practice manager still need a person. Tools could already take about 8 hours. Running the day, hiring and letting people go, owning the budget with the owners and being the compliance contact are the least exposed work you do. About 56% of your week sits there.

Schedules, the monthly numbers pack, routine policies and much of the phone and front-desk flow are more exposed. The August 2026 poll from MGMA, the medical group managers' association, found 83% of medical groups now use AI in some patient visits, up from 71% a year earlier. Its 2025 poll found scheduling, reminders, phone trees and message routing among common AI uses.
The bigger risk to your seat is ownership. As of January 1, 2026, 82% of US physicians worked for hospitals or corporate owners, and those buyers acquired about 13,900 practices from 2024 to early 2026. When a practice is bought, billing, credentialing, HR and purchasing usually move to a central team. Your plan is about being the manager the owners rely on now and the one a buyer keeps.
The hard truth
Most practices now belong to a hospital or corporation.
Independent practices are becoming rare. After a sale, billing, HR and purchasing often move to a central team, and one manager may cover several clinics.

What stays yours
Running the clinic day: the late provider, the upset patient at check-in, the call-out
This takes presence and context. Someone with authority has to decide in the room, with knowledge nobody wrote down.
Hiring, discipline and terminations
You answer for these on the practice's behalf, and someone has to check the result. A bad hire shows up around 60 days, and in a small clinic everyone pays for it.
The budget and staffing calls with the owners
The owners want one person to answer for the number and the plan behind it.
Coaching leads and keeping good staff
This rests on relationships. You know whether your front-desk lead can run the morning without you because you have watched her work for months.
HIPAA, OSHA and the compliance file
You hold this accountability yourself. HIPAA requires a covered entity to designate a privacy official (45 CFR 164.530). In many practices that is the practice manager, by name.
What's the next role for a practice manager?
Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.
- A
Multi-site practice manager or practice administrator
Why it fits
Why you. You already run the whole business side of a clinic, and groups and buyers fill multi-site seats from site managers who can show results.
The gap. You have no written record of results and no lead ready to run your site.
The trade-off. More sites means more driving and less time on any one floor, and the first year is usually spent fixing the weakest location.
Other moves that fit
These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.
Patient access lead for AI agent rollouts
Why it fits
Why you. Someone has to decide which calls and messages a phone or text agent may handle, write the rules that send a patient to a person, and check transcripts. You know the clinic's call mix better than any vendor.
The gap. You have adopted tools but haven't led an agent rollout with measured results.
The trade-off. Vendor seats are few and senior, startup roles can end with the funding, and the agent you tune can reduce front-desk hours.
Operations role on a buyer's central team
Why it fits
Why you. If your practice is sold, the buyer needs people who know how a clinic's revenue cycle, credentialing and front desk actually run.
The gap. You would need to show results on one of those functions, usually revenue cycle.
The trade-off. You leave the clinic floor, which is the most protected work you do, and central teams are where AI tools land first.
What's a plan B for practice managers?
Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.
BPlan B, picked for this role
Clinic AI agent specialist
You know the clinic's call and message mix, the red flags front desk staff escalate, and which requests are routine.
Other options
AI workflow builder
You see every handoff in scheduling, referrals and prior auth each week, and rebuilding those steps with agents is this job.
AI governance analyst
Managing vendors, BAAs and compliance for the practice prepares you to inventory AI tools and match them to privacy rules.
In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.
The first two weeks
The first 2 of 13 weeks. Each week has two 30-minute sessions and one 45-minute session, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. Each one ends with something you keep or a number. By week 13 you'll have a written AI policy, a front-desk staffing plan, a results scorecard and the owners' answer on your ask, with a next step and a date.
- Week 1: Measure your week
What you do
- ALog your time for one week. Sort it against the task list in this report.
- AList every report you produce, who reads it and what they do with it.
- AList every AI tool in use at the practice, including ones staff use on their own.
- BTake the first half of Anthropic's AI Fluency course.
- Week 2: Study your phone calls
What you do
- APull two weeks of call volume from the phone system. Sort a sample of 50 calls by reason.
- ASit with your front-desk lead. Mark which call types need a person every time.
- AWrite one page on what changes for each front-desk person if an agent takes routine calls, and where their hours would go.
- BFinish AI Fluency and its final assessment.

Risks beyond AI: highOwnership and consolidation risk
Who owns the practice decides this seat more than any software does. When a health system or corporate buyer takes over, the work that can be centralized leaves first, and one manager is often asked to cover several clinics. AI phone agents and scribes make that case easier to argue, which is why this risk outranks the AI one for your seat.
Where this could be wrong
- We assumed an independent primary care group. Inside a hospital-owned clinic, a central team already holds billing and HR, less of the week is exposed, and the multi-site move is the main one.
- In specialty practices such as orthopedics, dermatology or GI, ancillaries and surgery centers add tasks we did not score, and private equity interest is often higher.
- If phone and text agents start handling clinical triage on their own, front-desk work becomes highly exposed faster than we expect.
- BLS projects 24% growth for medical and health services managers, but much of that line is hospitals and larger systems. It may overstate demand for managers of small independent practices.
