Example · Procurement Manager

Agents are taking the small buys and the bid tables. Companies still need one person who sits across from the big supplier and answers for the deal.

Is procurement a dying career?

By our task-by-task count, 35 of a typical 40-hour week as a procurement manager still need a person. Tools could already take about 5 hours. Negotiating major contracts, category strategy, supplier relationships, the budget owners you say no to, and the buyers you coach make up most of your week, and none of it is near the line where tools take over. About 62% of your week sits there.

The exposed work is purchase order (PO) approvals, small one-off buys known as tail spend, and the spend reports. Pactum's CEO said in May 2026 that its agents start "without humans in the lowest spend, lowest value negotiations," and Walmart uses them on suppliers it had no bandwidth to negotiate with.

The bigger risk to you is the count of seats. The Hackett Group's 2026 study found procurement workload rising 8% while headcount falls 0.9%. When agents clear the small work, a centralized function needs fewer managers between the buyers and the chief procurement officer. A manager who can prove savings finance accepts, and who runs the agents with clear limits, is the one kept when categories are merged.

The hard truth

Procurement is being asked to do more with fewer people.

Procurement teams expect more work in 2026 with slightly fewer people and smaller budgets. Tools and wider teams are meant to close that gap.

What you can doAgree with finance on how savings are counted, then report against it every quarter. Write the limits for what agents may buy, so the tools run under your rules.

What stays yours

Negotiating major contracts and price increases

The company delegates this accountability to you, and it takes context. You sign within an authority limit, and the supplier across the table is reading you. A model can prepare the case, but it does not hold the line in the room.

Category strategy for major spend

This takes context. Which supplier can scale, which engineer will reject an alternate, and what the business plans next year are not in the data.

Supplier relationships and escalations

This rests on relationships. In a shortage, the supplier ships first to the customer who treated them fairly.

Stakeholder intake and saying no

This takes context and relationships. Budget owners want speed and their preferred vendor. Holding policy without losing them takes judgment.

Coaching buyers

This depends on relationships. Whether a buyer is ready for a strategic category shows up over months.

What's the next role for a procurement manager?

Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.

  1. A

Senior category manager or procurement director who owns the agents

Ready in about 3 months for the evidence, and the title comes with the next reorganization

    Why it fits

Why you. You already run the categories and the team where the tools are landing.

The gap. You have no savings method finance accepts, no written agent limits, and no buyer ready to run your events.

The trade-off. You are building the case that one manager can run more spend. It may be used to merge your categories with a peer's.

Other moves that fit

These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.

  1. AI cost and vendor analyst

Ready in about 9 to 18 months

    Why it fits

Why you. You compare vendor pricing, read contracts and forecast spend, and AI tools are now a fast-growing line of company spend. The State of FinOps 2026 report (February 2026) found 98% of teams now manage AI spend.

The gap. You would need SQL, the database query language, and skill with cloud cost data.

The trade-off. The field is narrow and technical, and often a step down in title.

  2. Procurement transformation lead

Ready in about 6 to 12 months

    Why it fits

Why you. Centralized functions are rolling out intake, sourcing and agent tools and need someone who knows the work.

The gap. You have run one rollout on one team.

The trade-off. Transformation roles often end when the program does.

What's a plan B for procurement leaders?

Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.

BPlan B, picked for this role

AI cost and vendor analyst

Reading vendor pricing, catching costly clauses and tracking spend against target is the work of managing a company's growing AI and cloud bills.

Other options

  • Supply chain AI planning lead

You set what buyers may approve alone and when to escalate, which is the rule set a procurement agent needs before it acts.

  • AI governance analyst

Vetting suppliers for risk and contract terms carries into reviewing AI vendors for data use and safeguards before teams buy them.

In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.

The first two weeks

The first 2 of 13 weeks. Each week has two 30-minute sessions and one 45-minute session, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. Each one ends with something you keep or a number. By week 13 you'll have a savings method finance accepts, written limits for what agents may buy, a negotiation file for your top supplier and your director's answer on owning the agents for your categories.

  1. Week 1: Measure your week
    What you do
    • ALog your time for one week. Sort it against the task list in this report.
    • APull spend by category and supplier for the last 12 months. Note how much is under contract.
    • ACount the purchase orders (POs) and requests your team handled last month. Mark how many an agent could have cleared with no person involved.
    • BTake the first half of Anthropic's AI Fluency course.
  2. Week 2: Agree on savings with finance
    What you do
    • AAsk your finance partner in writing which kinds of savings they count, and how.
    • ARestate last quarter's savings under those rules.
    • AWrite a one-page savings method covering the baseline, the savings type, the evidence and who signs off.
    • BFinish AI Fluency and its final assessment.

Risks beyond AI: moderateCentralization risk

Procurement is being centralized and asked to do more with fewer people. When agents clear the small spend and the buyer layer thins, merged categories need fewer managers. That outranks the AI risk for your seat. Tariff and supply-shock work has pushed the other way since 2025, and we found no dated layoff naming procurement managers.

Where this could be wrong
  • In a pure indirect role at a services company, more of your week is tail spend and stakeholder intake, and exposure is higher than we scored.
  • If agents move from small buys to mid-size negotiations, bid (RFx) and contract work becomes highly exposed faster than we expect.
  • Gartner predicted more than 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027. If that happens, exposed work changes more slowly.
  • Tariff and supply-shock work has added hours to the protected tasks since 2025. If trade policy settles, those hours shrink and the case for fewer managers gets stronger.

This is an example. Your plan uses your own week.
