Is civil engineering safe from AI?
In the work a civil engineering student is heading toward, 30 of a typical 40-hour week still need a person, by our task-by-task count. Tools could already take about 10 hours. Civil engineering graduates are in one of the strongest positions of any major right now. In the New York Fed's 2024 data by major, recent civil engineering graduates had 2.3% unemployment and 15.6% underemployment, the third-lowest underemployment of 73 majors (New York Fed, The Labor Market for Recent College Graduates, February 2026).

Firms say they still cannot fill every seat. Software is getting good at the drafting and paperwork that fill an intern's week, and that part of the job will shrink.
What holds is the part many students feel least ready for. Someone has to stand on the site, read the plans against what is in the ground, and answer for the design. In this field, the law requires a licensed professional engineer (PE) to seal the drawings, and the path to that seal starts with the FE exam, the first licensing exam, and years of supervised work. Your next semesters are about showing a hiring manager that you can do the checking and the field work, and lining up a paid summer that puts you on the licensure track. Nothing here asks you to change majors or learn to code for a living.
The hard truth
Your first four years are a lower-paid apprenticeship.
Civil engineering is steady, but it starts slower. The PE license is where your pay and authority grow.

What stays yours
Walking a site with the plan set and spotting what doesn't match
The ditch may not be where the plan shows, the utility may be deeper than the survey said, or the contractor may have poured before the inspection. Someone with boots on has to see it. The task list for civil engineers in O*NET, the federal job database, includes "Inspect project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications."
Checking a calculation against the agency's own manual
A stormwater calc can be arithmetically right and still use the wrong rainfall data or runoff coefficient for that county. Catching it takes knowing which manual governs. As tools write more calcs, the checker becomes the scarce person.
Coordinating with a contractor, a utility or a permit reviewer
The reviewer's habits, the utility's real schedule and the contractor's workaround live in phone calls and memory. A model can't read those.
Working under a PE who will seal what you produce
State law requires a licensed engineer to answer for the design. As an engineer-in-training you work under that seal. The licensure path (FE exam, about four years of experience in most states, PE exam) is how the accountability becomes yours. Policy Statement 573 from ASCE, the civil engineering society, says "AI cannot serve as a replacement for the professional judgment of a licensed Professional Engineer."
Field and lab materials testing
Breaking concrete cylinders and running slump tests needs hands. Technician certifications such as the American Concrete Institute's (ACI's) Concrete Field Testing Technician, Grade I stay with you when you change employers.
Which civil engineering careers grow with AI tools?
Plan A is your best move in the field you are studying for. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.
- A
Start at a public agency, such as a state transportation department, county public works or a water utility
Why it fits
Why you. If you liked field days, want to design, and need summer pay, public owners run intern programs and some hire interns straight into engineer jobs. Illinois DOT's Intern to Hire initiative (September 2025) launched with 63 civil engineer openings and cites "an industrywide shortage of civil engineers."
The gap. No public-sector experience on your resume, and agency applications open on their own calendar.
The trade-off. Public pay usually starts below private firms, so compare offers side by side. Hiring is slow, and budgets track the funding cycle. Check that the agency's work counts toward PE experience under your state board's rules; most supervised engineering work does.
Other moves that fit
These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.
Work on the construction side as a field engineer, inspector or construction manager
Why it fits
Why you. If the site makes you nervous, this is where that changes fastest. Field work is the task in this role that holds up best.
The gap. No site hours yet, and no OSHA 10-hour card, the basic construction safety course.
The trade-off. Expect early mornings, weather and travel. Some state boards credit construction experience toward the PE differently than design experience; check your board before you assume it counts.
Join a design firm and work toward your engineering license
Why it fits
Why you. This is the classic path to the PE license, and if you have had a drafting internship, you already have a head start.
The gap. A portfolio that shows checking as well as drafting.
The trade-off. Your first year may be work the tools half-do. Ask in interviews how often juniors go to the field.
What's a plan B for civil engineering grads?
Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.
BPlan B, picked for this role
AI workflow builder
Pair your checking habit with a little scripting, and you can automate the repetitive quantity and spec checks a design office runs weekly.
Other options
AI deployment strategist
Coordinating with contractors, utilities and permit reviewers is the people work construction tech startups need when rolling out AI tools.
Expert AI trainer (contract)
Checking a calculation against the agency's own manual is the precise check platforms want when grading AI engineering answers.
In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.
The first two weeks
The first 2 of 13 weeks. Most weeks have a 45-minute, a 60-minute and a 90-minute session, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. Weeks 9 and 10 are finals and drop to one main session plus the Plan B session. By week 13 you'll have a one-page portfolio with a timed drafting test, a checked calc and a site report, at least 15 internship applications sent, and a target date for the FE exam.

What you do
- AList a typical week of your classes, labs and projects. Mark which parts AI already helps with, such as drafting, calcs or report writing.
- AClaim your free Autodesk Education and Bentley Education student access. Install Civil 3D, the road and site design software.
- AJoin ASCE, the civil engineering society, as a free student member. Find your chapter's next meeting or site tour.

- Week 2: Map your options
What you do
- AAsk your career center which employers hired civil juniors from your school last summer, and which public agencies take interns.
- ARead the BLS pages for civil engineers and construction managers. Pick three facts that stand out.

Risks beyond AI: moderateFunding-cycle risk
Federal surface transportation law under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act expired on September 30, 2026 and runs on a short extension through December 11, 2026, without the IIJA's advance appropriations for programs like bridge formula grants. Money already committed keeps flowing for years, and firms still report open seats, but public internships and agency hiring can tighten fast when Congress stalls.
Where this could be wrong
- The destination blend is ours. We assumed half design firm, a quarter public agency, a quarter construction. BLS puts 51% of civil engineers in engineering services and 21% in state and local government. Your department's placement data would correct it.
- Environmental engineering majors may have a different week: more permitting and compliance writing, which is more exposed, and fewer field hours.
- Routine calcs may become easy to automate sooner than we expected. If agencies publish design manuals in forms tools can read directly, the "wrong manual" error we lean on gets rarer.
- The degree counts cross ASEE editions and definitions. ASCE's 2020 and 2022 figures and ASEE's 2023 figure may not be strictly comparable.
