Is electrical engineering safe from AI?

In the work an ECE student is heading toward, 27 of a typical 40-hour week still need a person, by our task-by-task count. Tools could already take about 13 hours. Two of the biggest building projects in the country run through your degree: new chip factories and a power grid that has to carry more load every year. Electrical engineering graduates had a 3.2% unemployment rate in the New York Fed's latest data by major, well under the all-majors rate (New York Fed, The Labor Market for Recent College Graduates, February 2026).

Computer engineering graduates fared noticeably worse, closer to computer science. Which half of "ECE" you lean toward matters more than any AI headline.

AI is changing the desk half of a first engineering job. A model now does a first pass at writing the testbench, drafting the firmware driver, running the standard study and writing up the lab. The bench half and the field half hold up well. Finding out why a real board won't boot, walking a substation and putting your own lock on equipment before you touch it all need a person with hands and a name. Your remaining semesters are for collecting proof that you can do that half, and for landing one paid co-op or summer before senior year.

The hard truth

Electrical engineering grads found work more easily.

In 2024, recent computer engineering grads had one of the highest unemployment rates of any major, while electrical engineering grads did well. Skills in circuits and power may give your first job hunt more options.

What you can doKeep lab, circuit, embedded and power skills sharp even if you love software. Take the FE exam if you lean toward power, and target utilities, chips and device makers.

What stays yours

Debugging a circuit on the bench with a scope and a meter

This rests on presence and verification. A model can suggest what to probe, but it cannot hold the probe, see the ringing on the edge or notice the regulator running too hot. Bring-up and bench debug are the reason junior hardware hires exist, and they stay with the person in the lab.

Putting your own lock on equipment before working on it

This depends on personal accountability. OSHA's lockout rule says "each authorized employee shall affix a personal lockout or tagout device" under group lockout (29 CFR 1910.147(f)(3)(ii)(D)). That duty is personal from your first day on site. Few entry jobs in any field give a new graduate that kind of personal accountability, and this one does.

Wiring and testing a student team's battery or power system

What protects this is context and presence. A project car or robot has quirks that live in the team's heads and its wiring harness. Nobody documented why the battery system trips on the third lap. You find out by being there.

Checking circuits answers, in your own homework or as a grader

This comes down to verification. You spend hours telling right answers from plausible wrong ones. That is the skill the industry needs most now, because tools produce plausible wrong answers at volume.

Turning "it cuts out on hills" into a measurable fault

This rests on context. The gap between what someone reports and what the system did is undocumented. Models read logs, but they don't interview the driver.

Which ECE careers grow in the age of AI?

Plan A is your best move in the field you are studying for. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.

  1. A

Aim for power and grid jobs through a co-op and the FE licensing exam

Ready in about one semester, with the FE exam in senior year

    Why it fits

Why you. If you liked your power systems course, work on a student team's battery or power system, or need a paid summer, this is your door. Utilities, engineering consultancies and data-center builders run structured co-ops and pay them.

The gap. Usually one power course, no study-software experience, no site time and no plan for the FE, the first engineering license exam.

The trade-off. Starting pay is usually below chip design. Work moves at the pace of regulation and capital budgets. You may be on a storm rotation. Some of the first year is drawing one-line diagrams and checking other people's studies.

Other moves that fit

These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.

  1. Aim for hardware testing and board debugging jobs

Ready in about 3 months, with one board built and logged

    Why it fits

Why you. If "something I can touch" describes the job you want, and you have debugged a lab circuit or a team project, this is that job.

The gap. No board of your own, no bench log, nothing on your resume that shows you can debug without being told the answer.

The trade-off. Product hardware teams ride product cycles and get cut in downturns. Pay varies widely by industry. Firmware tasks inside this move are among the most exposed in the table, so lean toward the bench side.

  2. Keep chip design jobs open with low-cost practice

Ready in about 3 months, with a decision by junior spring

    Why it fits

Why you. It pays the most. BLS lists the median for computer hardware engineers at $161,740 (May 2025), with 9% growth and about 4,100 openings a year.

The gap. Little Verilog beyond one course, no testbench of your own, no verification vocabulary.

The trade-off. Expect long odds at the entry level, frequent master's requirements and the most exposure to agentic tools of the three moves. Do not let it crowd out power engineering or hardware bring-up.

What's a plan B for electrical engineering grads?

Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.

BPlan B, picked for this role

Data center critical power technician

Lockout habits and bench debugging with a scope and meter carry right into keeping a data center's power systems running.

Other options

  • Warehouse robotics and maintenance technician

Wiring and testing your team's battery system means you can read schematics and troubleshoot robots on a warehouse floor.

  • Expert AI trainer (contract)

Grading circuits homework as a TA prepares you to spot where an AI's circuit analysis goes wrong.

In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.

The first two weeks

The first 2 of 13 weeks. Thirteen weeks starting mid-October of a fall semester. Most weeks have a 30-minute, a 60-minute and a 90-minute session, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. During finals in weeks 9 and 10, you do one main session plus the Plan B session. Weeks 11 and 12 fall over winter break, when your board arrives, and week 13 is the first week of spring term. By week 13 you'll have a circuit board you designed and powered on, a bench log with 15 or more faults, and about 20 co-op, summer and research applications sent.

  1. Week 1: Measure your week
    What you do
    • AList a typical week of your classes, labs and projects. Next to each item, note which parts AI already helps with, using the 13 tasks on this page as a guide.
    • AVisit or email your career center. Ask which employers hired your school's ECE juniors for co-ops (paid work terms) or summer jobs, and which ones had no line at the career fair.
    • AInstall KiCad 10, free circuit board design software. Redraw your last lab's circuit in it.
    • BTake the first half of Anthropic's AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, a free online course. Keep one lab or design project in mind as you go.
  2. Week 2: Start your bench log
    What you do
    • AStart a file called bench.md. For every lab or project fault this term, write what you measured and what the cause was.
    • APick a small microcontroller board that reads a sensor your team or a class needs. Write a one-page spec with three tests it must pass.
    • AUpdate your resume. Describe class projects, team work and any grading or TA work as engineering: faults you found, systems you owned and people you helped.
    • BFinish AI Fluency, then start AI Fluency for Students. Read your department's AI policy alongside it.

Risks beyond AI: moderateCapital-cycle risk

Chip hiring follows capital spending and federal policy, and both moved in 2025 and 2026: big layoffs at one major chipmaker, a delayed fab, and renegotiated CHIPS Act awards. Power and utility hiring tracks load growth and rate cases, and that side is moving in your favor.

Where this could be wrong
  • The destination blend is ours. We assumed about a fifth of graduates go to power and a third to board-level hardware. Your department's placement report would correct it. Tilt toward chip verification and your exposure rises; tilt toward power and it falls.
  • The New York Fed's computer engineering figure may be noisy. It is one year of survey data for a smaller major, and it may include graduates working as software developers. We rely on the direction: computer engineering sits closer to CS than to EE.
  • The 2026 EDA agent claims are unverified. If they hold up independently, chip verification and schematic work get worse fast and the chip design path drops further. If they don't, entry-level verification jobs have more time than we gave them.
  • The CHIPS picture changes quickly. Awards were renegotiated in 2025 and 2026, and the research center's operator lost its funding. A new round of awards or cancellations would change the chip design path and parts of the hardware bring-up path.

This is an example. Your plan uses your own week.
