Is FP&A a dying career?

By our task-by-task count, 31 of a typical 40-hour week as an FP&A manager still need a person. Tools could already take about 9 hours. Planning platforms now ship agents for the work your analysts do. Pigment launched an Analyst Agent in September 2025 that writes month-end variance commentary.

Anaplan made its Finance Analyst agent available in December 2025 and set its CoModeler, which builds model logic from plain-language requests, for general availability in Q1 2026. That work sits mostly with your team. Your own week is in decent shape: about 42% of it holds up well, and it is the part your seat exists for. That means owning the forecast call, partnering with department heads, presenting to leadership and leading analysts.

The bigger risk is the layer you sit in. If agents draft the pack and the analyst team shrinks, a finance director can work with one senior analyst and a platform, and the manager between them starts to look optional. The FP&A manager who owns forecast accuracy and the rules for the tools, with numbers to show, is the one the CFO keeps.

The hard truth

Most CFOs expect fewer junior roles in finance.

Analysts are the people you lead and the bench behind you. A thinner bench can mean fewer FP&A teams to manage.

What you can doKeep one analyst growing toward your job, with clear ownership of part of the forecast. Report your forecast accuracy every quarter, so your seat is tied to a number leaders watch.

What stays yours

Owning the forecast call

The CFO wants one person who will say "this is the number" and explain it when it misses.

Business partnering with department heads

No system tells you which leader pads a forecast, or why.

Presenting to the CFO and leadership

Live questions in the room need someone who knows the business and the model.

Leading analysts

Only you can judge who is ready to own a business unit and who is stuck as a deck builder.

Challenging department submissions

Pushing back on a hiring plan takes standing that a tool does not have.

What's the next role for an FP&A manager?

Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.

  1. A

FP&A manager who owns forecast accuracy and the planning tools

Ready in one quarter for the evidence, and the next promotion cycle for the title

    Why it fits

Why you. You already own the forecast and the analysts, and you sit where the tools' drafts meet the CFO.

The gap. You have no accuracy ledger, review rules or measured time saved yet.

The trade-off. You are building the case that FP&A can run with fewer analysts, and they report to you.

Other moves that fit

These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.

  1. AI value and return-on-investment analyst

Ready in about 1 to 2 years, often through an enablement role first

    Why it fits

Why you. You already build business cases and track whether spending pays off.

The gap. You have not yet measured an AI project end to end.

The trade-off. Most openings are senior, and some need heavy travel.

  2. Finance director or head of FP&A

Ready in about 12 to 24 months

    Why it fits

Why you. With analysts and the CFO's trust, you are a natural next pick.

The gap. You need an analyst you have grown into a lead and a record of running work through other people.

The trade-off. This is often the layer merged when two finance teams combine.

What's a plan B for FP&A leaders?

Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.

BPlan B, picked for this role

AI value and ROI analyst

You set baselines, build business cases and explain variance every month, which is how a company tests whether its AI spending pays off.

Other options

  • AI cost and vendor analyst

Forecasting a bill, flagging waste and challenging padded budget asks is the daily work of tracking a company's AI and cloud spend.

  • AI workflow builder

You know every manual step in the monthly pack and reforecast, so rebuilding them with agents and no-code tools starts from your own process.

In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.

The first two weeks

The first 2 of 13 weeks. Each week has three sessions of 30, 45 and 30 minutes, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. In a close or reforecast week, do just the first session and Plan B. By week 13 you'll have a forecast accuracy ledger, written review rules for AI drafts, and a two-page AI value case with a results scorecard.

  1. Week 1: Measure your week
    What you do
    • ATrack one week of your time against the task list in this report.
    • APull the last six quarters of forecast versus actual, line by line, into one sheet.
    • AList the leadership questions from last quarter that you could not answer the same day.
    • BTake the first half of Anthropic's AI Fluency course, a free online class. Write down what you would hand to AI and what you would check yourself.
  2. Week 2: Learn what the platform will turn on
    What you do
    • AAsk the planning software vendor or your systems team in writing which AI agent features are in your contract and when it renews.
    • ARead the agent guides. Sort what the agent writes on its own from what it only suggests.
    • ACompare that list to your time log.
    • BFinish AI Fluency and pass its final assessment.

Risks beyond AI: moderateDelayering and cycle risk

When agents draft the pack and analyst seats go unfilled, a finance director can work with a senior analyst and a platform, and the manager layer looks optional. FP&A teams also get merged in cost programs and acquisitions. Postings still ask for FP&A managers, which is why the level is moderate, but it outranks the AI risk to your own tasks.

Where this could be wrong
  • At a smaller company the FP&A manager is the head of FP&A, and the seat is safer and broader.
  • Agent quality comes from vendor announcements. If variance commentary needs heavy rewriting for longer than expected, analyst teams shrink more slowly and the manager layer holds.
  • FP&A follows the business cycle. A downturn can remove the seat faster than any tool, and a growth year can add analysts back.
  • Gartner's flattening figure is a 2024 prediction, and the Datarails survey comes from a vendor. We found no count of FP&A manager seats removed.

This is an example. Your plan uses your own week.
