Branch closures started shrinking this job years before anyone mentioned AI.

Are personal banker jobs going away?
By our task-by-task count, 30 of a typical 40-hour week as a personal banker still need a person. Tools could already take about 10 hours. The country has about a fifth fewer bank branches than it did at the 2009 peak (Retail Banker International, November 2023), and many surviving branches have absorbed others nearby. That is digital banking and cost, with or without a model in the building.

On the AI number alone you are among the more protected people we have scored: a large part of your week needs someone physically in the branch, answerable under rules that name the bank.
The other half matters just as much. What a bank hires a personal banker to do, open accounts and have product conversations, is what digital channels already do well. The presence that protects you is a customer's decision to walk in, and that decision has gone against the branch for a long time. Your risk is that the branch keeps fewer people every year and your title stops being a step anyone climbs from. The business owners and the fraud work are where the next steps up still are.
The hard truth
Your future customers may never walk in.
Most people now bank mainly on an app, and only a few mainly visit a branch. Among Gen Z it is almost no one.

What stays yours
Stopping the wire for the customer being coached on the phone
This needs a person in the room, careful checking and someone who answers for it. You saw her face, you asked who was on the line, and the bank is answerable under BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) and elder-exploitation rules for what you did next. A model reads the transaction pattern, but it cannot read the lobby.
Taking a Regulation E dispute and getting it right the first time
This rests on the bank's legal duty. The dispute rule, 12 CFR 1005.11, gives the bank ten business days to investigate or provisionally credit, 45 days to finish, and a written explanation on denial. A named institution has to answer, and the intake is where most denials are won or lost.
Knowing a small-business owner's seasonality, and who does his books
What protects this is context that is undocumented by design. His financials are in the file, but the reason his line usage spikes in April is not. That is what a business banker is paid for, and you may already have it for a dozen accounts.
Being the human in the room for an account that needs a real ID check
This comes down to presence and regulation. The Customer Identification Program rule (31 CFR 1020.220) requires name, date of birth, address and ID number, verified against an unexpired government document. A kiosk can scan, and someone still owns the exception.
Fixing the thing the back office broke, in front of the customer
This needs a person in the room who answers for it. A fee reversal from a chatbot and one from a person who apologizes are different products, and banks know their customers know it.
What's next for a personal banker?
Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.
- A
Business banking: small-business relationship manager track
Why it fits
Why you. Business owners often already come to you. You already handle beneficial-ownership certification, merchant services and the line-of-credit referral you can't close yourself, which is the front half of a business banker's job, for free.
The gap. You need to read a business tax return on your own, know how a line of credit is sized, and learn the basics of SBA 7(a), the Small Business Administration's main loan program. Most postings prefer a bachelor's, which evidence and an internal transfer can beat and a cold application often can't.
The trade-off. Regional banks fill this pipeline partly from college credit-training programs, and your bank may route the seat to one of those hires. The scorecard changes units rather than disappearing. Associate pay is a modest step up, so check current ranges on local postings. The money comes with the portfolio.
Other moves that fit
These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.
Financial crimes: fraud investigations or BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) operations
Why it fits
Why you. Every wire you have stopped counts. Bankers who write a clean suspicious-activity referral and get a Regulation E dispute intake right the first time are what a fraud team hires when it stops trusting branch paperwork.
The gap. You need the ABA (American Bankers Association) Certificate in Fraud Prevention and a working knowledge of the FFIEC BSA/AML manual, the examiners' guide to anti-money-laundering rules. Most credentials with letters after them want two years in the function first.
The trade-off. This is back-office work, and it gives up the customer-facing work. Watch out for alert review, because clearing a model's flags all day is the new entry-level job and the next thing to be tooled. Aim at case work. Entry pay is close to branch pay, so check current ranges on postings.
Branch leadership: assistant branch manager, then branch manager
Why it fits
Why you. A clean audit record helps here, and so does being the person the tellers already come to with questions.
The gap. You need a market lead who will vouch for you.
The trade-off. The number of buildings falls every year, and the role is consolidating into "market manager" across three or four sites. You would own the scorecard. Treat it as a step toward business banking rather than a destination.
What's a plan B for bank tellers and bankers?
Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.
BPlan B, picked for this role
AI agent ops specialist
Fixing what the back office broke in front of a customer is the kind of floor experience banks want running their AI service agents.
Other options
Agent simulation scenario designer
You know the real cases, like a Regulation E dispute or a customer being coached on a wire, that AI agents must be tested against.
Content provenance specialist
Stopping a coached wire already makes you a scam spotter, and verifying voices and documents is growing as fakes get better.
In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.
The first two weeks
The first 2 of 13 weeks. Four sessions a week: 30, 60 and 90 minutes, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. Each session ends with something you keep or a number you can use. By week 13 you'll have a dispute checklist with before-and-after numbers, two practice credit memos in a two-page portfolio, and three applications sent.
- Week 1: Measure where you stand
What you do
- APull your last four quarters of scorecard results. Count the referrals you made and how many of them closed.
- ALog your time for one week. Sort it against the task list in this report.
- AList every business customer you handle and what you did for each. Leave out all names.
- BTake the first half of Anthropic's AI Fluency course, Framework & Foundations. Use only made-up customers in any example.
- Week 2: Review your dispute intakes
What you do
- APull your dispute intakes from the last 12 months. For each one, note the outcome and any denial reason.
- ASort each denial into one reason: incomplete intake, late notice, caused by the customer, or a back-office error.
- ARead 12 CFR 1005.11, the federal rule for Regulation E disputes, slowly and once. Then write a one-page intake checklist in your own words.
- BFinish the AI Fluency course and its final assessment.

- Small Business Banker CertificateAmerican Bankers Association · $495 member / $695 non-member; 1-year access
Yes, if reimbursed. Weeks 3–12. It is sales and relationship training rather than credit, so pair it with the memos.
- Certificate in Business and Commercial LendingAmerican Bankers Association · $1,295 member / $1,595 non-member
Not yet. It is the credit foundation Plan A eventually needs, and a business-banking seat should pay for it.
- Certificate in Fraud PreventionAmerican Bankers Association · $795 member / $1,095 non-member; 1-year access
“Financial crimes: fraud investigations or BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) operations” only, months 4–6, reimbursed. It counts toward CAFP eligibility.
Risks beyond AI: highBranch-channel risk
Foot traffic and the real-estate plan decide how many chairs your branch has, and branches have been closing and consolidating for well over a decade. That, more than the AI score, decides how many people your branch keeps.
Where this could be wrong
- We scored presence as protective for account opening. If the bank moves ID exceptions to a video-verification vendor, that task becomes easy to automate and pressure on entry-level jobs rises by several points.
- The business banking move assumes your bank staffs business banking from branches at all. Some regionals fill it entirely from degree-required credit-training programs; then the path runs through a credit union.
- The branch-volatility picture is national. A fast-growing metro can still add branches, so check your local market.
- Cerulli's 72% is cross-channel. Bank-channel advisors who inherit referrals fail less often; if one offers to team with you, our case against wealth management weakens.
