Example · Sales Manager
Companies are moving to fewer, larger sales teams, whatever the tools do. Aim to be the manager whose large team is well coached and forecast accurately.

Is sales management a dying career?
By our task-by-task count, 33 of a typical 40-hour week as a sales manager still need a person. Tools could already take about 7 hours. Sales management is a growing occupation on paper. BLS counts 650,100 jobs in 2025 and projects 4% growth to 2035, with a median of $148,270 (May 2025).

Inside software companies the picture is tighter. Gallup found the average US manager's span rose from 10.9 to 12.1 direct reports between 2024 and 2025. ICONIQ data reported by SaaStr in March 2026 showed high AI adopters at $25M to $100M in revenue running about 45 go-to-market (sales, marketing and customer) staff where low adopters run 65. Autodesk cut about 1,000 jobs in January 2026, mostly in customer-facing sales teams, as it finished a go-to-market overhaul.
The work that makes your seat worth having, coaching, deal strategy, the forecast call and the people calls, is the least exposed work you do. About 61% of your week sits there. The risk sits in how many sales teams a company keeps. A manager who can show a wide, well-coached team with an accurate forecast record is the one who keeps a seat when two teams merge.
The hard truth
Fewer than half of reps hit quota, and companies are widening teams.
Most of the reps you manage will miss their number this year. At the same time, managers are being handed bigger teams.

What stays yours
1:1s, ride-alongs and live coaching
You know which rep freezes on pricing and which one is coasting after a big quarter. A model can score a call, but it cannot earn the trust that makes a rep change.
Deal strategy on live opportunities
Who actually signs, which champion is about to leave and what the last vendor got wrong are mostly not in the CRM, your sales database.
Calling the forecast and answering for it
Leadership wants one name next to the number. A tool can predict the deal, but someone has to commit to it.
The hire or no-hire call
A bad sales hire shows up two quarters later as a missed number and a lost territory.
Performance management, improvement plans and exits
Someone must stand behind a plan or a termination in front of HR.
What's the next role for a sales manager?
Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.
- A
Senior sales manager who owns the team's AI selling system
Why it fits
Why you. You already run the team where the tools are landing, and you sit where forecast, coaching and pipeline meet.
The gap. You need a measured forecast record, written AI rules and coaching evidence.
The trade-off. You are building the case that one manager can run more reps, and it may be used to widen your span.
Other moves that fit
These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.
GTM (go-to-market) engineer or GTM engineering manager
Why it fits
Why you. Postings now ask for people who build the AI and data workflows that find and reach buyers, and some want sales leaders to run those teams. Clay posted a Strategic Sales Manager (GTME) role in London on July 2, 2026 asking for 6+ years leading customer-facing technical teams.
The gap. Most postings want SQL, the database query language, a CRM admin background and working automations you have built.
The trade-off. The title is new and loosely defined, and the April 2026 posting spike may settle.
Second-line sales manager or director
Why it fits
Why you. If you run a wide team well, you are a natural next pick.
The gap. You need a rep or team lead you have grown into a manager.
The trade-off. This is the layer flattening removes first, and fewer first-line teams means fewer second-line seats.
What's a plan B for sales managers?
Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.
BPlan B, picked for this role
GTM engineer (AI sales systems)
You already know which signals turn into real pipeline and which reps ignore, and GTM engineers build the systems that act on those signals.
Other options
Agent workforce manager
You set activity standards, review output and decide what needs your approval, and a team of outreach agents needs the same rules and checks.
AI value and ROI analyst
You call the forecast and defend it to finance, so measuring whether an AI tool actually moved revenue is a short step from your week.
In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.
The first two weeks
The first 2 of 13 weeks. Three sessions a week: 30 minutes on Monday, 45 on Wednesday and 30 on Friday. Every session ends in something written or a number. You also do one 40-minute Plan B session a week. By week 13 you'll have a forecast ledger with your before and after error, coaching files for two reps, and a one-page memo to your VP with a clear ask.
- Week 1: Measure your week
What you do
- AKeep a time log for one week and compare it with the task list in this report.
- ACompare your forecast call with actual bookings for each of the last four quarters.
- AMake a sheet with each rep's quota attainment, pipeline coverage and ramp-up time.
- BTake the first half of Anthropic's AI Fluency course, a free online class.
- Week 2: Start a forecast ledger
What you do
- AWrite down this week's forecast call, with one line of reasoning for each deal above a set size.
- AAsk your VP in writing what evidence they want behind a commit, the deals you promise will close.
- AIf you have a forecast tool, add its prediction next to your call.
- BFinish AI Fluency and pass its final assessment.

Risks beyond AI: highDelayering and bookings-cycle risk
Sales teams are sized from the bookings plan, and leaner go-to-market teams mean fewer reps per dollar of revenue. When a team shrinks or two teams merge, one manager seat goes, and durable work does not save the person whose team was folded in. This risk outranks the AI one for your seat.
Where this could be wrong
- We assumed business-to-business (B2B) software. Sales managers in retail, wholesale or manufacturing work in a different market, and the BLS 4% growth figure covers all of them.
- If forecast tools get trusted enough that leadership stops asking managers for a call, AI takes over more of the forecast and the seat loses one of its strongest reasons.
- If the player-coach push wins, managers carry their own quota, and closing becomes a much bigger part of your week than we scored.
- Gartner's tenfold agents prediction is a forecast. Gartner also expects fewer than 40% of sellers to say agents improved their productivity, so cuts in rep counts may come slower than the headlines.
