Example · Talent Acquisition Manager
Agents are taking the volume work out of recruiting. Be the manager who can say exactly how many recruiters the plan needs, and who answers for what the agents do.

Is talent acquisition a dying career?
By our task-by-task count, 34 of a typical 40-hour week as a talent acquisition manager still need a person. Tools could already take about 6 hours. Most of what makes your seat worth having is the least exposed work you do: the hiring plan, hiring-manager partnership, offers and closing, and coaching your team. About 60% of your week sits there.

The exposed part is postings, scheduling and req reporting. Workday agreed to buy Paradox in August 2025, whose assistant screens applicants and books interviews; Chipotle said it cut time to hire from 12 days to 4. LinkedIn says recruiters using Hiring Assistant review 83% fewer profiles to find a qualified match (September 29, 2026). Those are vendor numbers, but the direction is clear.
The bigger risks to you sit in two places. The first is the hiring cycle. When the plan is cut, recruiting is cut first, with or without a model. Hires in professional and business services fell from 1.04 million in August 2025 to 935,000 in August 2026 (BLS JOLTS). The second is delayering. Amazon's HR group, which includes talent acquisition, was reported in October 2025 to be planning cuts of up to 15%, and Uber cut 23% of its people division in June 2026. When agents raise each recruiter's capacity, a company needs fewer recruiters and fewer managers above them. This plan makes you the person who sets that number.
The hard truth
Your team size follows the hiring plan.
Recruiting grows and shrinks with hiring, and hiring has slowed. In professional and business services, hires fell about 10% in a year.

What stays yours
The hiring plan with finance and leaders
This rests on context you hold informally. Which reqs matter this quarter and which can slip is a negotiation, and your name sits next to the plan.
Hiring-manager partnership: intake, calibration, pushing back
This depends on relationships and context. A leader who trusts you will take your "this req is wrong." That trust comes from years of shortlists that worked.
Offer strategy, comp exceptions and closing
What protects this is relationships. A finalist with two offers decides on a conversation. Comp exceptions need someone who knows what the business will bear.
Managing and coaching recruiters
This comes down to relationships and context. Who is ready for executive search and who is burning out lives in your 1:1s.
AI hiring compliance: notices, audits, records
You carry this duty for the employer, and the work needs careful checking. When a rejected candidate challenges a screen, someone must show the notice went out and a human review existed.
What's the next role for a talent acquisition manager?
Plan A is your best move inside the work you do now. Most sessions in the 13-week plan build toward it.
- A
TA leader who owns recruiting capacity and the agents
Why it fits
Why you. You already own the plan, the team and the tools.
The gap. You don't yet have a capacity model, a measured miss rate or a compliance file.
The trade-off. You are building the case that fewer recruiters can do the work. It may be used to cut your team.
Other moves that fit
These are also good bets in this field. Read them if Plan A doesn't suit you.
Plan B: AI governance for hiring tools
Why it fits
Why you. You already run notices, audits and records for AI screening, and you know which tools rank or reject candidates.
The gap. You need governance vocabulary, such as the NIST AI RMF (a U.S. framework for AI risk), and a portfolio beyond hiring.
The trade-off. Most governance postings want compliance, privacy or legal backgrounds, and many are senior, so the first step may be a lateral move.
Head of talent at a growing company
Why it fits
Why you. Managing a team and a hiring plan is the usual path to running all of TA (talent acquisition).
The gap. You need workforce planning and employer brand experience beyond your current group.
The trade-off. Head-of-talent seats are among the first removed when growth stalls, and many growing companies hire an RPO, an outside recruiting firm, instead.
What's a plan B for TA leaders?
Plan B is a job AI is creating that these skills already fit. One session a week in the plan trains you for it, so it is ready if your job shrinks or you want a change.
BPlan B, picked for this role
AI governance analyst
You already have to know which screening tools count as automated decision tools under new state rules, and that inventory is where AI governance starts.
Other options
Agent workforce manager
You set recruiter loads, review their pipelines and decide who approves offers, and sourcing and scheduling agents need that same kind of manager.
AI evaluation specialist
Writing clear hiring criteria and checking whether screens miss good people is the skill of building test cases and grading AI output.
In your own plan you can switch to any of the 47 roles.
The first two weeks
The first 2 of 13 weeks. Three sessions a week of 30, 45 and 30 minutes, such as Monday, Wednesday and Friday, plus one 40-minute Plan B session. By week 13 you'll have a recruiter capacity model, a measured miss rate for your screening tools, a compliance file, and a memo asking to own recruiting capacity and AI hiring tools.
- Week 1: Measure your starting point
What you do
- ALog your time for one week. Match each block to a task in this report's task list.
- APull reqs (open job requisitions) per recruiter, time to fill and hires for the last four quarters.
- AList every tool in your hiring funnel that drafts, ranks, screens or rejects candidates.
- BWork through the first half of AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, Anthropic's free course on working with AI.
- Week 2: Build a capacity model
What you do
- AFor each recruiter, write down reqs carried by type and hours spent at each hiring stage.
- ABuild a simple model of how many reqs a recruiter can carry with and without each tool.
- AAsk your finance partner in writing what number they use for recruiter capacity.
- BFinish AI Fluency and pass its final assessment.

Yes. It is short, and it shows what a team can package for agents.
Risks beyond AI: highHiring-cycle and delayering risk
A cut to the hiring plan can remove recruiting seats in a single quarter with no model involved. Then the team that comes back is sized to the agents, which means fewer recruiters and fewer managers above them. Both of these outrank the AI exposure of your own tasks, so watch your req count and your team's shape more closely than any product launch.
Where this could be wrong
- We scored a corporate TA team. In high-volume frontline hiring, scheduling and screening are a much bigger share, and agents already do most of it.
- If legal or an AI governance team takes over the compliance file, one of your mid-weight tasks leaves your seat.
- Vendor figures from LinkedIn and Workday are the companies' own measures. Actual capacity gains may be smaller, which would slow the squeeze.
- The hiring cycle may turn. If openings recover, the plan grows and the capacity question gets easier.
