My boss keeps pushing AI. Is my job next?

Watch what your company does more than what it says. A contract signed for every team or a seat left empty tells you more than a memo.

Signals from each field

Each report lists the signs that mean move faster, and the signs that mean you have more time.

  • Marketing coordinator

    Marketing and communications

    • Someone leaves your team and isn't backfilled.
    • Content volume expectations rise without headcount.

    All the signals

  • Sales development representative

    Sales and customer

    • An outbound agent is bought before anyone has agreed what "qualified" means. Someone else is defining your job.
    • The next SDR who leaves is not backfilled and the quota is redistributed, not reduced.

    All the signals

  • Staff accountant

    Finance and insurance

    • The firm skips a campus cycle or cuts the junior class by a third.
    • A tuned client's exception count drops under about 10 per cycle, the point where a partner asks why two people review it.

    All the signals

  • Software developer

    Data and technology

    • The agent pilot opens to all engineers on the main repo. That is when the change begins.
    • A mid-level leaves and the req is not backfilled.

    All the signals

  • Project coordinator

    Operations and retail

    • Copilot seats reach coordinators before you have a measured pilot; someone else is defining what "checked" means.
    • The other coordinator leaves and the seat is not backfilled.

    All the signals

  • HR generalist

    People and learning

    • The broker's platform is bought before your requirements exist, so someone else writes the reconciliation control.
    • A chatbot goes live on the handbook with no miss report and no data rule.

    All the signals

  • Paralegal

    Legal and compliance

    • The firm signs a generative-review contract for all matters, not pilots.
    • A departing paralegal is not backfilled and tools are the stated reason.

    All the signals

  • Medical records specialist

    Healthcare administration

    • The encoder adds an auto-finalize path for inpatient encounters, however narrow.
    • A validator or auditor role is posted before you hold the CCS. Apply anyway, with the log.

    All the signals

  • Operations manager

    Management and consulting

    • A buyer or roll-up calls your owner.
    • Your owner or boss talks about running lean or having one person cover two locations.

    All the signals

  • Registered nurse

    Clinical care

    • Your hospital announces a go-live date for ambient charting in nursing.
    • Acuity or staffing software starts setting assignments on your unit.

    All the signals

  • Retail sales associate

    Frontline, trades and transport

    • Your store adds a shopping assistant to its app or to kiosks on the floor, and managers start pointing shoppers to it.
    • Your weekly hours drop two or more weeks in a row while sales hold.

    All the signals

  • IT project manager

    Product and delivery

    • A copilot or portfolio tool starts producing the steering deck directly, with no human confirmation step.
    • A senior PM leaves and the req is not posted, or a vendor's delivery lead is named change approver.

    All the signals

  • Business and marketing student

    Students

    • The career center's list of employers who hired marketing interns shrinks year over year.
    • "Marketing coordinator" postings in your area fall while "marketing analyst" postings hold steady.

    All the signals

  • Data science master's student

    Graduate and professional school

    • The OPT fee proposal is finalized, or DHS publishes its separate practical-training proposal (RIN 1653-AA97). See your international student office the same week.
    • No sponsor reply by Week 6. Switch to your second choice or a volunteer project; do not wait.

    All the signals

Ask, too

It is fair to ask your manager how your role will change. Questions to ask at work.
